When should children have their first dental appointment?
While adults shoudld see a dentist at least twice per year for a cleaning, exam and oral cancer screening, the scheduling of exams for children is a bit different. At Garden State Smiles, parents often ask us when their kids should see the dentist. It's really an excellent question!
Among others, these three things are definite signs that you should schedule a dental appointment for your child:
- Tooth pain: Tooth or gum pain can occur any time in adults and children. It's important to consider that even if the pain stops, the problem that caused the pain to start is probably still there. If your child complains of tooth pain, bring your child to the dentist for a checkup as soon as possible.
- Sensitivity: Tooth sensitivity usually means there is a cavity present, especially if the sensitivity occurs or worsens when eating hot or cold foods. If your child experiences this, they should come in for an exam.
- Bleeding or swollen gums: Bleeding or swollen gums are most often caused by inflammation, which can lead to more serious issues if not addressed.
In addition to any of these situations, your child should be seen by a dentist by age 2. If you have questions, please contact us and we’ll be more than happy to talk with you about the best plan to care for your child’s teeth.
